Qualifications

The following are highlights of several decades of education and work.

BA Cum Laude at Ohio State, Phi Beta Kappa; PhD at Stanford, Organizational and Social Psychology;

Ten years at Michigan State University, co-developed a nationally prominent PhD program that focused field experimental methods on organizational innovation;

Five years at National Science Foundation, leading a group that funded applied research on technological Innovation Processes, as well as doing studies on emergent problems (e.g., how did Three Mile Island happen?);

For nine years I led a Center of 35 staff (in an Institute of 120) in Ann Arbor that conducted R&D sponsored by industry and government on computer assisted manufacturing and design systems;

For six years I was Director of the Southern Technology Council (in Research Triangle Park, NC) working with governors, legislators, business and R&D leaders in 14 southern states, with a major focus on understanding “best practices” in incubating tech companies, and fostering university technology innovation;

During seven years at Cal Poly I was a Professor, a Department Chair of Industrial Technology, and a founding co-Director of the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, dramatically increased R&D funding;

Over a career, 166 publications, consultations with dozens of organizations and over $10 million in research support.

All of my work experience has been focused on solving important problems in the world we live in; this includes publications, reports, presentations and dozens of consulting engagements focused on improving technology innovation.
